WOW! Our survey of scientists who stopped using Twitter and started using Bluesky is now the #1 most-shared on social media article in the history of the journal Integrative and Comparative Biology! Thanks for reading it, everyone! @sicbjournals.bsky.social

“The ability to tell the truth, especially when it does not suit any particularly partisan aims, is an essential prerequisite for a free society” great article
My new @science.org editorial on the role of scientists in defending democracy is out today. As authoritarianism takes hold in the US, we must fight for the democratic principles that enable a free society and scientists have a key role. I hope you'll join us.

Scientists’ role in defending democracy
The United States’ democratic leadership, commitment to freedom of expression, and investment in the pursuit of knowledge have long enabled its preeminence in science and technology. Yet today we are ...

Look. At. This. (!). A fungus spore landed on this weevil. Grew inside and caused it to climb to the top of this plant- while the fungus killed it. Consumed its body. Used that energy to shoot up a red fruiting body to release more spores. To zombify more weevils. A mind controlling killer fungus.

“This trabecular bone is highly anisotropic with trabecular orientations reflecting the mechanical load distribution along the limb” very interesting . I didn’t know bone could grow like that
lovely to come back from holiday to find this paper is now out -- I really enjoyed collaborating with @camillebader.bsky.social, @houssayecnrs.bsky.social, @johnrhutchinson.bsky.social et al on this 🦣🦴
Oh! Another paper! From @camillebader.bsky.social Camille Bader's PhD, with Alexandra Houssaye @houssayecnrs.bsky.social. Elephant limb bone microanatomy reflects bone function and posture.

I know you all know this, but apparently it needs to be said that basic science is a NECESSARY PRECURSOR to translational science
NSF to ONLY fund research in five areas: artificial intelligence, quantum information science, biotechnology, nuclear energy, and translational science. Can this be happening?

funding research is not a cost...its an investment!
This response by @jeremymberg.bsky.social is powerful. Saying the US does more than its share of scientific research is "like saying we're getting more than our share of economic growth", given our 2 1/2 fold return on every dollar invested in research. Forbes says cuts will cost the US $10bn/yr.
Senator Durbin noted that some (I believe Republican Senators) had indicated the US had been doing more than its share of biomedical research and it was time for other countries take a turn.

I felt I had to interrupt to respond...
