Obviously, science is never that simple. But the authors of this editorial postulate that development of the hippocampus (a brain center associated with memory) may be associated with nap transitions

When we “fall back,” don’t waste the gift of an extra hour. Go to bed one hour earlier, wake up at your usual time, and keep the new schedule. That simple shift gives you an extra hour of sleep every night through fall and winter. #SleepTips #DaylightSavingTime

The clocks go back, and suddenly your toddler's up at 5 A.M.
Go to bed later, keep mornings dark, and stay consistent.
Most kids adjust in 3--5 days -- and you can thank Big Candy 🍬 and Big Golf ⛳ for the chaos.

Vacations sometimes mean breaking the sleep rules — like bedsharing with your preschooler.

The trick? Call it a “special sleepover” and explain that it’s only for the trip. That way, you can make it magical now and get back to your routine later.

#Melatonin can help with #jetlag . It's also better to use it intermittently than every night.

But remember:
1. Low doses often better than high doses
2. It is a tool to help BEHAVIORAL CHANGE take root-- not a substitute for better sleep hygiene

I use melatonin sparingly in little kids. And I'm an expert. Please talk to your pediatrician before you try #melatonin in a little one.

One study of over the counter melatonin preps in the US showed a huge range of variability. PMID: 27855744. This is because #melatonin is regulated a food supplement in the US.

Most kids shouldn't need #melatonin long term. Here are some things to consider with your pediatrician.

Most kids should not need supplements or medications for sleep. If your child does, you still need to use behavioral methods to teach your child to sleep independently. And have a plan for coming off the supplement or medication ASAP #melatonin #magnesium

At night your pineal gland makes #melatonin from about an hour before you fall asleep until about an hour after you wake up in the mornings. A lot of parents don't realize that it is a hormone.
March 5, 2025 at 6:39 PM
The risk of #melatonin overdose is very real, for multiple reasons.
1. The Gummification of medicine
2. Lack of child safety bottles
3. Appealing packaging
4. Widespread use

Remember to keep these meds in a safe place, start low, and go slow. Talk to your child's pediatrician.

Like many of you, I'm having a rough week so I wore some of my favorite colorful socks to cheer myself up

In the morning, a patients mom noted them and said that her son also likes fun socks

At the end of the day she showed up at her other son's appointment and brought me these.
