Ed pulls back to look into Stede’s eyes. “It was incredible. You’re incredible.” Stede starts to scoff, but Ed cuts him off. “Nah uh, doesn’t matter that you’re not a pro. You made this long plan and went to all this trouble, and you put yourself out there. Was fucking vulnerable and I loved it. It moved me, and that’s what music is supposed to do.” Overcome, Stede ducks his head onto Ed’s shoulder. “Keep practicing and we’ll be doing duets soon,” Ed adds, with a kiss to the top of Stede’s head.

Ed goes up the steps of his little porch and unlocks his front door. “Ed?” Ed takes a deep breath before turning and seeing Stede Bonnet, standing at the bottom of his porch steps and looking anxious. He’s clutching a bottle of wine, as if he weren’t temptation enough all on his own. A look Ed can’t read passes over Stede’s face, but then, quick as lightning, he’s looking determined. “Can we talk? I brought a peace offering.” Ed bolts into the house, the door slamming behind him.

He loves Stede a little more every time he asks. “Yeah, maybe,” Ed admits, knowing that it’s better to talk to Stede and willing to let him initiate in his gentle way. “Okay. It doesn’t need to be right now. When you’re ready.” Hearing the love shining in Stede’s voice goes a long way to soothing Ed’s fears. “I want to. Just. Scared.” “Can I hold you?” Stede asks. “Then you can talk, or not.” “Yes, please,” Ed mumbles. He doesn’t move, but that’s alright because Stede lifts the duvet and slides in behind Ed, spooning him, putting an arm around his chest. The weight of that arm and the feeling of Stede’s breath on his neck helps ground Ed even more. He feels warm. Safe. Treasured. He still can’t speak, though. Can’t find a way to untangle his thoughts to find the point where it makes the most sense to begin. So he waits. “Can you tell me why you’re scared?” Stede asks, so fucking patiently, like Ed’s a scared kid. And maybe he is—he and Jenn have talked a lot about the care of his inner child. “I’m afraid you’ll leave me.” A rushed whisper. “Oh, Ed.” Stede is quiet for a long moment, and Ed knows that guilt at the way he left still eats at him sometimes. Ed’s got to be brave now. “No, fuck, not like how you think.” He needs to look at Stede for this, so he turns his body to face Stede and moves the duvet aside, blinking at the low lamplight of the room. “I know you won’t up and leave.”

#WIPWednesday for a fic I’ve been noodling on for months (inspired by Supercut by Lorde). Nervous but excited to present Come Home to My Heart, aka innkeeper exes.

Would you like some tea?” Jeffrey asks kindly. He is at least aware of some of the tension simmering away here. “We turned the gas on, and it turns out the kitchen’s in decent shape…” ”No, thank you,” Stede replies, not ready to be left alone with Ed when he feels raw and vulnerable. An exposed nerve. A glass face. That’s what Ed always said Stede possessed. Stede tries to school his expression into careful neutrality as he takes a seat adjacent to the couch. He hopes it’s more of a frosty, opaque sort of glass nowadays. Ed looks older. Like he’s been though some stuff. He looks good. But that had always been effortless for him. Easy, breezy, the type roll right out of bed and into glamor. Whereas Stede always labored for hours at the gym, over his hair and skin, and with the care of his wardrobe. Stede sniffs. Ed had never used the delicate cycle in his life. To be fair, he did take meticulous care of his hair. (Glorious, now silvery, hair. Stede’s not sure how his knees kept him upright .) He clears his throat and looks at Jeffrey. “Why is Edward here?” he asks quietly. “Did Sally leave him a legacy?” That would be surprising—Sally hadn’t owned anything but this inn. Ed looks up, as if he wants to say something. Instead, he grimaces and takes a sip of his tea. Jeffrey pulls a manila envelope off of a side table and sits in the other armchair. He looks nervous. “Well, she left a letter for me to read. Very dramatic of her—I tried to tell her people only do this on TV.” He barks a laugh. When neither Stede nor Ed laugh, Jeffrey rushes on. “I must advise you that her wishes, as expressed in this letter, are not binding. There is no force of law behind them. The two of you may do as you wish with the property.”

Stede leads him down to the trail to the entrance to the back of the waterfall, explaining as they go that he read about it in Baedeker’s, and telling him a bit of the history of the thing. They find themselves behind the waterfall a moment later. “This is what I wanted to see,” Stede nearly shouts, so he can be heard over the sound of the rushing water. It’s dark and cool in the moss-covered grotto. In silence, the two of them look out at the park through the veil of the falling water. The park is full of people, yet they’re alone here, as if they’ve stepped through the looking glass to another world that’s just their own, existing in parallel to the real world. This world, dark as it is, seems to exist in full color—the warm tones of Ed’s eyes and hair and skin—while the world outside is colorless, like a movie. We only have this one life.

Ed takes another sip of his drink. The sweetness and bitterness are incredibly well-balanced, complementing each other perfectly.
