This is ridiculous and the letter makes no sense.
The Trump regime is now using US Attorneys to intimidate academic journals by sending them letters demanding they explain how they ensure ‘viewpoint diversity.’ Journal editors should be public about this and coordinate to refuse to comply with these fascist tactics.

This, in and of itself, does not do much, but it’s the type of fighting back that has to be done by more Democrats.

President Donald Trump’s order shutting down DEI offices was part of a slew of presidential directives from the new administration that apply to every federal agency.

But for the NSF, following the White House’s order required it to ignore a mandate from Congress.

The release of OpenAI’s o1 poured fresh fuel on an old debate: just how long will it be until a machine is capable of the whole range of cognitive tasks that human brains can handle. Nature reports on the debate around achieving artificial general intelligence, or AGI. 🧪
How close is AI to human-level intelligence?
Large language models such as OpenAI’s o1 have electrified the debate over achieving artificial general intelligence, or AGI. But they are unlikely to reach this milestone on their own.

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.

Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.

Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"

Indeed. When they rounded up the Japanese Americans, myself and my family included, for internment during WWII out of fear over Japanese spies and saboteurs, two thirds of us were U.S. citizens.

This is spot on and you can point to a bunch of examples of this. I think immigration and foreign policy in the age of Trump have also been the victim of the pro-system and anti-system.
RFK announcement puts a fine point on something I've been trying to articulate and is a theme of the Trump years. It's something I've wrestled with and that a lot of Dem messaging has gotten wrong. Part of what Trump does is constantly divide the country along the lines of pro-system and anti-system
