Moore, a fierce Black nationalist, wrote to Parks — then a national icon after the Montgomery Bus Boycott — inviting her to join.

What strikes me most is the deep mutual respect.

Moore begins with “Dear Mrs. Parks,” & closes “Love to you for all you’ve done for us.”

“Love to you for all you’ve done for us.”

On the anniversary of Rosa Parks’s passing, I’m reflecting on a beautiful letter she received in 1957 from Queen Mother Moore — written just after Moore’s speaking tour as president of the Universal Association of Ethiopian Women.

Queen Mother Moore’s final words to the Million Man March crowd echoed the spirit of Marcus Garvey:

“My sons, I ask you to remember: Reparations! Reparations! Reparations! My sons, bond together, straighten your back. Up you mighty people! You can conquer what you will!”

One of Queen Mother Moore’s final public appearances, at 97 years old, was at the historic Million Man March held in Washington D.C. on October 16, 1995.

“A monumental achievement. The meticulousness of Ashley Farmer’s research is matched only by the grace of her prose. The result is a lucid, fascinating biography—a rendering worthy of the great Audley Moore herself.”

“Queen Mother is a sensitively written take on a century of Black history, and an absorbing account of a Black woman who survived the ravages of white supremacy and responded to the challenges of her life with intellectual curiosity, moral courage, and clarity.”

Happy Juneteenth! Today we honor the end of slavery in the U.S. — a pivotal moment in both Texas and American history. How are y’all commemorating?

I often give lectures on this historic moment, so I decided to share some key points on Instagram: www.instagram.com/p/DLFd2alxLH...

Read about the women who shaped Malcom X’s life online if you’re a History Extra member at historyextra.com, or pick up the print edition in the UK.

There’s Malcom X’s mother, Louise Little, who was an activist herself. His wife, Betty Shabazz, was an educator and powerful civil rights advocate. And then there’s Queen Mother Audley Moore, who mentored him—and so many more whose stories deserve to be told.

Malcolm X would’ve been 100 today. To mark the occasion, BBC History Magazine asked me to write about the women who shaped his life and his fight for Black liberation.
