It's things like these that I think about. Situations when, had I known about my brain being different, I might have felt less shame and I could have made different decisions. I never like hurting others, offending, or making them feel small, even if it's unintentional. #autism

I'll never forget what he said next: "You treat everyone the same." I remember feeling shame at my mistake, yet also not understanding why this was a bad thing. I understand so much more now. I default to low self-monitoring, and that's unsettling to people who rely on social hierarchies.

In undergrad, my excitement about a project that could lead to authorship on a journal article upset my advisor. I guess I'd shared my excitement with the wrong person. The graduate student who mentored me told me that I'd nearly been removed from the lab for "bragging".
