Life stage-specific habitat use and trophic ecology of the critically endangered great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) - Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries
The great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran) is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN Red List and is one of the most iconic shark species worldwide. Despite its emblematic status, there are major…

‼️ New important shark paper 🦈
We demonstrate that all critical life stages (resting, feeding, being cleaned, mating & giving birth) can occur in the small Fakarava channel & we define it as a “super habitat”

Energetic benefits of prey choice for a shark-eating shark - Oecologia
Optimal foraging theory has been used to understand the foraging choices of animals but is rarely applied to large predatory fishes due to difficulties measuring their behavior in the wild. Great hamm...

New paper lead by @etspencer.bsky.social We use biologging to understand why great hammerheads may specialize on large prey like other sharks. If they hunt blacktips off south Florida then they probably only have to catch a shark once per month link.springer.com/journal/442

New paper! Electric rays can use their electric discharge to repel large sharks. Here a white shark carrying a camera approaches a Pacific electric ray. Something caused it to sprint 20 m shallower!

Vertical energy seascapes and diving behaviour modulate metabolic scope in a pelagic predator | Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
Pelagic fishes must obtain resources in prey-sparse habitats and may be considered energy speculators with maximization, gambling high energy costs (e.g. metabolism) for a high rate of return (prey ca...

New paper on stingray activity patterns in Belize. There is lots of individual variability with regards what time of day rays are active, but all seem to be highly active in shallow water. These may represent important foraging habitats

This is the first paper that I publish with undergrads from a statistical consulting & collaboration course I teach at University of Toronto.

With TA help, they did an amazing job fitting hidden Markov models and learning about Goliath Grouper. Our undergrads are top notch 👌🏽 #AnimalMovement 🧪
