Together these data show dynamic changes to the intestine and intestinal microbiome throughout stroke recovery and gives some insight into which factors may be responsible for prolonged gastrointestinal disturbance after stroke

We also found altered luminal IgG concentrations and reduced antibody coating of intestinal bacteria only at 3 months post stroke.

Changes to the composition of the microbiome were detected througout recovery. Surprisingly these changes were distinct at acute and chronic recovery time points suggesting different driving factors may be associated with these changes.

At our earliest timepoint, 5 days post stroke, there is a reduced mucus barrier in the colon and a delayed intestinal transit time. However these normalise in chronic recovery

We found lower body weights and structural changes to the colon persisted out to 3 months after experimental stroke (MCAO) in mice
