Some call it the heart of America, but really it is the butthole.
Before it got cold in mid Nov we harvested and processed a bunch of carrots. Mostly Purple Dragon but there are some purple helix mixed in there. Let them grow way too long so some were bitter but they cook up fine.

This meme has been haunting me. I sent it to a friend who claimed you can but failed to produce receipts. One might think - What about facing down the stairs but trying to walk backwards up the stairs? No! Not how it works. No crab walking up & down either.

My lonely Violette de Bordeaux Fig. Just one! 🤫 It has been a few weeks & it is 2x in size. But unfortunately I don't think the weather will hold. Probably no figs this season but that is ok. I didn't want to try 1 from a plant I've been tending to all season. 🙄

Time for the fall flowers! The New England Aster flowers have attached lots of bumblebees, honey bees, and a mighty monarch! butterfly. I counted about 100 bees. They were all very happy. Also I didn't eat the monarch butterfly.

Onion stawks dried while ago. Got one decent sized 1 few weeks ago. Then I got a huge harvest! Almost golf ball size! 🫩

No wiffle ball clue why I can't get onions to grow. Probably the heat. Growing in loose dirt. Water, feed. 🤷‍♂️ Any suggestions?

Last pictures of Frankenmatoes & the cold frame. Bye bye to 2 pain in the Grogus. Tomato plants that grew so big the tomatoes weren't going to ripen & the cold frame that was only useful at 50F-75F. The pollen was asthmatic. More raised garden boxes!

When shopping the second hand/vintage stores you come across some interesting stuff. None of this came home with us. But I did like the sheep just not our thing. I do wonder who bought this crap originally, especially the 'lip stick panther'.

I didn't think my Violette de Bordeaux Fig plant would produce this year but yesterday I checked it & there is a fig starting! But it is 9/3, Fall is here so I doubt it will get big enough to eat. Next year we should get some figs tho!

Went to the Toledo Zoo. Actually got to see some animals that are usually never out, such as the Dingos and Coconut Crabs. They also got a new leopard! And of course Kirkja. She was playing with a barrel. As always, well worth the trip.

I've tried making salsa from 'fresh' store bought tomatoes multiple times. Always tastes like garbage. SO said to try making salsa with our Sungold/cherry tomatoes. Ok, wow, huge difference! So good. Guess I know what to use them for from now on. 🤷‍♂️

Found this little lady in the compost bin. Google lens was pretty useless - told me it was a jumping spider 🙄. It is not. Pretty sure this is a Funnel Spider. Keep protecting the compost and I'll keep putting in food that brings the bugs. Win/Win.

Canning tomato sauce! We finally got enough super sauce tomatoes from the garden to make tomato sauce. Probably going to get 11 jars total. Which isn't a lot but enough to see if we want to do this again.

I had some space out front behind the tomato plants (if you can believe that) so I planted bush beans. They took off, started to bean but then the deer and bun buns came by and we'll no more plants. This is why I have raised garden boxes.

My second crop of dragon tail radishes - purple pods. I like radishes but I can't eat them fast enough. I pan fry my green beans, dragon tail radishes, carrots, etc w/butter. Good in salads too. If you like radishes, I suggest growing them.

Caught these nasty freaky bugs doing it on my melon. Perverts! I was going to eat that melon! Not any more! 🤢 What a waste!

#vegetablegarden #vegetablegardening #gardening

I gave the melon away to my unsuspecting family. They will never know. Not bcuz of the bugs but bcuz I already had one to eat.

I'm pretty sure this is a house wren. So small, so cute. There were 2 but they don't stay still for long. They checked out the bird feeder area and the native plant sanctuary before flying off. Hopefully they will be back.

Every year there are volunteer tomato plants. Most I pull out. Left 3 to grow in the 'green house'. Well that was a mistake. Tomatoes completely took over. 1st pic is from early June, 2 & 3 are from a few days ago.

The 3lb coffee can asparagus is growing pretty well. Seems like all the plants survived. We can't wait to try it. Hopefully next year we will get some, if it survives the winter. Research says it is the 'best' tasting asparagus. 🤞

We got 3 mango melons this week. The 1st 1 I thought needed another day or 2 but it ended up splitting so I picked it. Turned out to be perfect ripe. The other 2 I am giving to family since we can only eat so much melon before my insides liquefy.

I picked some carrots for dinner last night. Usually I can grab the tops, twist to break the roots then pull them out. Had some trouble cuz of long boy carrot! Had to dig down a bit to get the carrot free. Summer heat = slightly bitter but still ok.

I tried an Aurora pepper. I did my homework knowing the pepper would be spicy. But sweet baby T-Rex I was not prepared. It was close to Habanero spicy. The days of eating that much spice are behind me, unfortunately.

1st pic - May 15thish. 2nd pic - mid July. Still amazes me how much the blackberry bushes have grown in just a few months. Some of the branches are 10ft long, from the skull pile to Jazzy Jeff the Welcome Skeleton. My favorite plant this year.

The one mango melon is starting to turn yellow but it is starting to split. Hopefully it will ripen fully without issue. So excited!
