This is a low-res pic from another banding day, but the eyas is even younger and you can sort of get the idea about the talons. Those suckers get delivered early.

Completely unrelated, but a couple of months ago I was telling you about the peregrine watch and how I was invited to hold one of the eyases for the photo op. I just found the photos. Cropped my face off, bc who wants their face on social media (I guess some do).

Fulton St Collective (re: my previous post) hosts terrific concerts several times a week. I do live painting there about once a month. This is from Wednesday night, a painting of the wonderful Matt Mallinger

So lovely! I'm also noticing pink birds bc the other day, the most aggressive gull fighting over some fries (🙄) was bright, light pink; really surprising. Couldn't get good photos. A friend told me it may be staining from a water source, perhaps with iron. But a pink rock dove is another thing!
Three gulls on the ground with a bag of food. Two are pure white with grey wings; one is pale pink with grey wings.

Absurdly touching shot of a tiny grey-brown bird launching itself up off a thin branch with new leaves on it. Its legs are extended straight down, already not touching. It's looking up and forward, little bill casting a shadow on its neck. Its wings must be moving; we don't see wings.

🪶 Today would've been Mikhail Mokeyev's 51st birthday. I've been posting photos he took, mostly at Montrose in Chicago; a little tribute to a kind, talented human who's missed. After misidentifying a Magnolia as a Canada yesterday, I double-checked today's. This spectacular hot mess is a Downy.
Perched facing away from us on a split branch, the bird is a tufty, ruffled swirl of black and white plumes and spots, with a few scruffy red feathers on its nape, a sturdy bill in profile, and light caught in a beautiful red-brown eye.

Just the head and top of the breast of a small bird otherwise hiding in very green leaves. Medium silvery grey side of head and shoulder, yellow throat and breast, a hint of yellow showing at the top of the back. Beak tilted upwards. White spots above and below the eye, on the eye ring, look like bright reflected light, but are not. Watching us
