The fight for LGBTQ+ rights in my home country is significant for us living abroad. I got to speak a bit about that in this interview.

This eight-part series investigates the backsliding of LGBTQ+ rights in Africa and the consequences for Canada as a country with a feminist foreign policy.
Diaspora can help inform LGBTQ+ advocacy
Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah, an LGBTQ+ activist in Ottawa, says people with ties to other countries can help advocate for human rights abroad. She says Ghana’s large diaspora in Canada can help

This is fraught terrain Mayor Sutcliffe. Police already have ample powers to restrict protests at schools, hospitals & places of worship when needed. Anything further needs very careful study. Court challenges elsewhere already pending. Don't rush this.

The Alberta government has issued a new plan for combatting "gender-based violence."

Interesting choice to note the high rates of gender-based violence against LGBTQ2S+ people, even as the AB government pushes policy that itself leads to more of that violence 🤔

BREAKING: Rechie Valdez is the new Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism.

Feminist advocacy made this happen ✨

All eyes focused on PM Carney's cabinet announcement and a potential WAGE Ministerial role 🤞🏿

If this ends up a win for the sector, that mandate letter will absolutely be combed with a fine tooth comb.

Will this role be feminist or not?

Today's platform drop includes this transphobic gem:

"Defend women’s safety by repealing Commissioner’s Directive 100, which allows male offenders to be housed in women’s prisons and ensure that women’s spaces and services remain protected in federal institutions and policy."

Increased criminalization under the guise of "protecting women" is extremely violent and anti-feminist.

So so gross.

Abortion *ACCESS* in 🇨🇦 is the issue.

It's inconsistent from province to province, creating huge barriers for those in northern/rural/remote communities.

Investing in a robust healthcare system would ensure everyone can access the necessary healthcare they need.

I’m concerned by all the posts I’m seeing that argue we need to choose between fighting for Canadian sovereignty and fighting for equity-deserving groups.

These are Canadian values — this is literally what we are defending.

It’s not one or the other. We need to do both.

Canadians — listen to these voices. There’s a whole slew of them, and they are our experts in making Canada what we want it to be — a diverse, equitable and inclusive nation.

That’s my Canada. A nation that defends not just our sovereignty, but our country’s values as well.

So Canadian feminists are pretty upset about the elimination of the Minister of Women and Gender Equality. Actually upset is way too diplomatic a word. The reality is that bro culture has taken over our politics, left and right. And we are about done with it

"WAGE is now under Heritage! Don't worry!"

🤨

1) Where was the heads-up to feminist civil society?

2) A re-named department of "Canadian Culture and Identity" doesn't entirely make that clear.

3) Partisanship is a killer of critical thinking.
