In 1949 this museum doorway was widened and fitted with doors repurposed from old St James’ church, a building also damaged in the war. The painting shows St James’ church in 1868 by architect Thomas Talbot Bury (1809-1877) during work to uncover and consolidate Norman architectural details.

This door for #adoorablethursday is from the Maison Dieu. Above the door a carving of the word Museum in the stonework can still be seen marking a former entrance to Dover Museum. After bomb damage at its Market Square site in 1942 the museum temporarily moved to the ground floor of the Maison Dieu.

Seeing @danherb10.bsky.social photograph of this beautiful church door in Barfreston reminded me of this pen drawing of the same door in a sketchbook dated c1830 from #Dover Museum's archives.
