It’s hard to overstate how important Unidata is to weather research & communication, but the program paused most of its operations this month due to a lapse in funding from the NSF freeze. Atmospheric rivers (ARs) can bring vital moisture to the U.S. West Coast but can also cause damaging floods. To understand the flow of water globally & locally, our scientists created a visualization using a combo of the MPAS and CESM models, displaying the large-scale & small-scale details of ARs.

Linda pioneered the field of regional climate modeling, led the National Academies review of the US National Climate Assessment, and inspired hundreds of us to more rigorous science in support of climate services. She will be sorely missed. 💔
Very sad news: Linda Mearns passed away last night. A huge loss to her many friends and colleagues, and a tremendous loss to science. She research and insights improved the lives of millions. Her intelligence, humor, and obsession with uncertainty will always be remembered.
