His speaking style is extremely effective for dealing with Trump and the current GOP - he can joyfully eviscerate them without stooping to their schoolground bully level of discourse. Obama's style was an effective response to Bush/Cheney, and Mamdani's style is the perfect response to Trump.

I don’t understand why, but many white Chicagoans feel a constant need to assert that they are a cut above suburbanites. I’ve lived in several big US cities, and only in Chicago were people so thin-skinned about suburban-vs-urban distinctions.
