Photographer. Long career getting longer! Currently finishing two bodies of work about communities—a nonprofit in Canada, a hospital in Sub-Saharan Africa. Oh yeah! Three books published by Black Moss Press, Windsor. Can you dig it! www.douglasmaclellan.ca
Windsor, Canada, 2025. Homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, loneliness, young and old, rich and poor. I see it everywhere I travel in Canada. Complicated subject. Good people doing good work, which I find inspiring.

I voted in the upcoming Ontario election. I live in Windsor. Under powers given to him by Premier Ford, Strong Mayor Dilkens usurped, twice, the democratic will of the people via city councillors to maintain an unreasonable campaign promise. Fundamentally wrong. Vote!

I cast my Ontario election advance vote ballot this morning. The current premier called an early election to take advantage of two situations—a national crisis caused by the US president and a weak opposition. This premier deserves a greatly reduced minority government—at best.

"...the notion that Canada would make "a very fine 51st state" has many ordinary Canadians feeling uneasy, even threatened," publishes CBC News today. It's an analysis piece about NATO and article 4 by Murray Brewster titled "Allies appear to duck and cover as Trump threatens Canada and Denmark.

If this were any other time, and any other country, the sort of talk we've been hearing from Trump would have drawn howls of allied and international outrage. Yet, there has been no direct public cond...

All this talk from the neighbouring country to the north—it is a geographical oddity—and the grey winter days are accumulating on my soul!!!

re US imposes 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. I say put a 25% tariff on all USA products entering Canada. Escalate!

I used to love taking street photos but stopped for any number of reasons. I tried today but moving on. Fun though.

Inspired by @stephanienolen.bsky.social 's NYT eye surgery article, I present my similar but different one from Zimbabwe. A two day cataract clinic at Karanda Mission Hospital in the Mt. Darwin area. Surgery by Dr. Angela Gwariro. A really upbeat story. The patients can see again!

What is the value of the still image, a digital still capture, these days? I'm not so sure and I've been on the case for 46 years!

Traveling quite a bit the last 11 months—Africa, Kitchener, Toronto, Vancouver. Some for professional photography, other for family reasons. That's unusual and happy to be on the road (or train, in this case.)

A foreign country, our so called best friend, threatens to cause meaningful economic harm to my country. Both countries enjoy a free trade agreement negotiated by the leader of that friendly country yet Here Come the Tariffs. Who benefits?

Anyway, here is a photo from my front door.

What a day. A foreign leader is threatening to take over my country and willing to use "economic means" to do so.

Here's a picture of the monkey bars at my local park.

Sheesh.

I've posted photos to represent what I've done and what I'm doing in photography. I photograph specific communities in Canada and Africa. Colour, light, long form are my techniques, people generally are my subject. That's my slow introduction to you on Bluesky!

I have thoughts about the use of the notwithstanding clause to tear down this and other encampments. This is the camp that lead to the charter challenge. They won.

Kenya, 2004. Reviewing my archive. The Global Aware assignment covering AMREF Canada projects in Uganda complete, I end up in and around Amboseli and Tsavo national parks with new friends. Not a camera geek but I loved the Canon G5—slow, pokey, chest high to use.

I've been culling followers on Instagram—mostly photographers. It's just not a two way street. I followed for professional development and staying in the fraternity but, heck, I don't see Jacob aue Sobol (JAS) and those of his ilk buying and supporting my books. PS. I keep JAS on my list.

I love photography but what I practice—photojournalism/ documentary—seems irrelevant. I wonder, what good and purpose is a still image in a digital world today?

Good thing Canada has a Trump negotiated free trade agreement. That man wouldn't back down on an agreement he made would he? What does he really want, I wonder.
