And, so, the 11 day lockdown begins. With major repairs on both sides of the highway, we can't leave the mountain until they've finished. The projected completion date of 10/19 is just that. A CalTrans projection. At least Nature is blessing us residents with cool, autumnal weather for now.

I just watched a hawk swoop down on a squirrel in my front yard. Three crows then harassed the hawk, making it let go of the squirrel, and saving its life. I feel for the hungry hawk but cheered the squirrel's saving.

The winter seems anxious. It feels like an early winter chill here and I see hints of snowflakes slipping in while the rain has paused.

The rain came early this morning, although no thunder yet. The elderly turkey that has adopted my yard (Lady Cleo) stood on the fence, chatting with me. Her tail feathers, which looked to have been cut off, are growing back. She seems to be in better spirits.

My past experiences - the joys, the pains, the cudgels, the blankets - are locked in the back of my life. Their roots reach deep in a ground that is no longer. Holding on to their branches, I, too, am held in place, unable to move. Only by letting go can I move forward on my path. Today, I let go.
