I'm thrilled to share this music video from my album, "Days of Gypsy Nights". I wrote this piece a few days before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

For me, this tune evokes the immense power of nature and how it challenges us, first to survive, and more ultimately, how to live in harmony with it. #JazzComposition #InstrumentalMusic #Saxophone #Piano #StringQuartet #NewMusic

Katherine and I drove to the coast and shot some video. Video magician Michael Whalen has transformed it into the third music video from my album -- which we'll premiere at my album listening (and watching) party on Sunday!

Listening to Steely Dan on a Saturday evening turned into an hour of playing and singing along... so fun!

Katherine and I hosted a small party to celebrate the release of my album Days of Gypsy Nights. I performed 7 of the 9 pieces, with the help of backing tracks. I especially enjoyed answering a few questions afterwards, mostly about how the music came to be.

Is it escapist to find comfort in music? We Ithacans jokingly call our town "Mythaka"; is the name and "10 square miles surrounded by reality" disparaging? Music seems to come from a place of ideals, a reminder to take care of not just our bodies but also our minds and souls.

A first review for my new album was published on New Music Alert. It's fascinating to hear and read others' reactions; it's both surprising and not when a reviewer has an experience not unlike my own when writing and recording the music.

I dusted off my old PA and started practicing for a small house party to celebrate the album release! It's available for pre-order on Bandcamp and will be out on April 18.

Yes, it's a "legacy format" and lots of people don't have ways to play CD's. Still, I was excited to receive these -- it means that the music will be going out into the world, in this form and digitally, soon! (April 18)   #composerlife #jazz #stringquartet

My first single, Afraid to Love, will be out soon. Here are a few moments from the recording session where we overdubbed the string quartet over piano/sax/bass/drums. Many thanks to David Davidson and the other players, David Angell, Chris Ferrell, and Austin Hoke. #jazz #composerlife #stringquartet

The video for my first single is done! I'm really excited about it, and it will be out Real Soon Now. This isn't it! But here are a few behind-the-scenes moments from the session when Michael Rosen, Tim Reppert, Marcello Pellitteri and I recorded the tune. #jazz #composerlife

I was curious about something I use a lot in composing. Where did I hear it first? Why do I find it a bit "magical"?

I don't often talk about things quite this mystically, but this resonates -- I am often struck by how music seems to alter, even transform, the listener's space.

A trip to New York to shoot video has expanded to include a recording session, for a future project. One tune is demoed/charted, and well under my fingers. A second - not. I thought, "I don't need time, I need a deadline" (Duke Ellington) -- but now I'm wishing for a little more time!

My new album "Days of Gypsy Nights" (Ithacans of the 70's will get the reference!) will be out on April 18! I've updated my web site (dougwyatt-music.com), where you can subscribe and not rely on the algorithm to remind you :) Thank you all for your encouragement!

I found myself remembering and then listening to Spiral Dance, the first track of Keith Jarrett's Belonging. I'd forgotten how much I love this album -- maybe Garbarek at his most brash, Jarrett playing with fire and yet a bit of restraint.

I never get tired of hearing Aja, the title track. The harmony is complex and modulating a lot, but there's a seemingly perfect balance between inevitability and surprise. The lyrics seem to tell two stories at the same time. And then there's Wayne Shorter's sax solo and Steve Gadd's drumming.
