Heart Mountain, visible from McCullough Peaks, is also a fascinating Big Horn Basin treasure. It is a distinctive peak that serves as the signature backdrop of Cody, WY. The mountain was part of the largest landslide in history, some 50 million years ago, and slid at great speed deep into the Basin.

The mountain was part of the largest landslide in history, some 50 million years ago, and slid at great speed deep into the Basin.
Anyone with a capable vehicle can drive through McCullough Peaks end to end, exploring less used trails, spotting wildlife, and taking pictures of the breathtaking scenery. Basic precautions like sunscreen, extra water, snake awareness and robust shoes should be employed of course.

McCullough Peaks is a publicly accessible area in the Big Horn Basin, where wildflowers dot the desert badlands and birds play on the air currents shaped by the stark landscape. Antelope, rattlesnakes, golden eagles and chipmunks can be found here, as well as wild horses.

The Big Horn Basin in Northwest Wyoming, situated east of Yellowstone National Park, is a geological marvel. It’s one of the few places where the original pink mantle rock of Earth’s crust can be found at the surface. It features sulfuric hot springs, forest, desert, and tons of ancient fossils.

I always wanted to take a picture like this, and while I know a real camera would create a much cleaner picture than my iphone, I feel pretty dang happy.
