Discord seems to have succeeded forums, but I know there is an active one for visual kei (forum.jrockone.com) so it's definitely possible! I do think a forum would face the same obstacles as a discord, but hey, at least it could have more style!

My problem with discord is that all it's very linear, all the conversations are happening one after another between everyone. It's hard to join/revive a discussion after you missed it even by a few hours and people have moved on to something else, and you have little say in curating your experience.

Yeah not great for private messages, those would have to go through a different channel. I am very much in favor of people owning their community spaces though. Hell it doesn't have to be mastodon, we could make an old-fashioned forum, but I think we are all used to the accounts + timeline by now.

This is managed, but I linked it just to illustrate prices. We could host it anywhere though! I just think it would be neat.
