The case with the bezel insert removed and sitting off to the side. I used a razor blade to get it off after soaking it in alcohol while I worked on the hands.

When people describe the world by appealing to black-and-white morality, they tend to reveal more about themselves than anything else. For many, such language suggests that they hold their own views to be unimpeachable and the other side’s to be irredeemable. But moral clarity, like beauty, is perishable and—at least in practice—subjective. Many of the protesters who assaulted police officers in the summer of 2020, for example, did so with the same ethical certitude as those who stormed the Capitol in January 2021. Both groups believed they were redressing an injustice—one racial, one electoral—that too many others wouldn’t acknowledge. Both groups evinced a kind of moralism that blinded rather than clarified, eliminating the possibility of persuasion, compromise, or open debate.

They said that during the trip, the Royalty and Specialist Protection Command of the Metropolitan Police told the F.B.I. that Mr. Patel's security detail could not be armed. Britain has strict gun-control laws, and the police limit armed details based on risk assessments. The police assessment on Mr. Patel found he didn't meet the threshold for an exemption. The details for the heads of the C.I.A. and the National Security Agency were armed, another U.S. official said. That discrepancy prompted an emergency meeting between the F.B.I. and British security officials. The British officials held firm.

British security officials rely on the bureau for high-tech surveillance tools — the kind they might need to monitor a new embassy that China wants to build near the Tower of London. The head of MI5, Ken McCallum, asked Mr. Patel to protect the job of an F.B.I. agent based in London who dealt with that technology, according to several current and former U.S. officials with knowledge of the episode. Mr. Patel agreed to find funding to keep the posting, the officials said. But the job had already been slated to disappear as the White House moved to slash the F.B.I. budget. The agent moved to a different job back in the United States, saving the F.B.I. money but leaving MI5 officials incredulous.

It was a seemingly stark illustration of the strain of the presidency on a 79-year-old who typically keeps a vigorous travel schedule that even his aides say they struggle to keep up with - and who has reveled in calling his predecessor "Sleepy Joe" Biden. White House officials have bristled at any comparisons to Biden, pointing to Trump's far more frequent exchanges with reporters and his regular schedule of public events. Trump typically takes questions multiple times a week, while Biden rarely did. They also have regularly praised the 79-year-old's energy, with aides saying that they struggle to keep up with Trump's round-the-clock phone calls and demands.

He held the lowest favorability out of 14 major political newsmakers, according to a Gallup poll from August, ranking five percentage points below Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who is facing charges of war crimes from the international criminal court. A separate Quinnipiac poll in June found that only around 2 in 10 women in the US held a favorable view of Musk.

This is such a stupid argument *because this is what CI already is*. There's no case for taking it away from the experts that results in more effective counterintelligence. None.
Supporters of Crawford's legislation say that the FBI has bogged down counterintelligence work by treating it as a law-enforcement matter. The bureau's job is to gather evidence to bring criminal charges, which is fine as far as that goes, they say. But-in their argument-rampant espionage by China, which includes the theft of valuable technical research from U.S. corporations and universities, demands a strategy to disrupt and deter those adversaries, not one that is always premised on bringing cases to court. "The counterintelligence threat is very real," the House Intelligence Committee spokesperson said. "This is not politics; this is about national security and the safety of Americans in the homeland."

ODNI has zero capacity to handle counterintelligence. Taking that function away from the Bureau would effectively eliminate it.
Counterintelligence can be a tricky area to define. Essentially, it’s spy versus spy—the work of catching foreign agents and disrupting espionage against the United States. James Jesus Angleton, who led the CIA’s effort to identify Soviet moles during the Cold War, famously described the practice as “a wilderness of mirrors.” Now the FBI performs the bulk of counterintelligence investigations. As part of this work, specially trained FBI agents cultivate sources in foreign intelligence agencies. *The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which is largely an administrative agency, has no comparable investigative arm* [emphasis mine], something law-enforcement officials and intelligence veterans we spoke with were quick to point out.
