Talking movies, mainly action & genre.

Opinions are my own.
Kind of embarrassing how few Eastwood directed movies I've watched, but JUROR #2 has got me convinced I need to see more. Between this and Nosferatu, I'm also all in on Nicholas Hoult in starring roles. He's got that quiet, reliable juice.

Banderas has really cornered the market on this one.

Give me a single image from a film that immediately makes you hear the song from the soundtrack playing in your head.

Revisiting Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing. Delightful stuff. Denzel's charisma is off the charts, Keanu in sneering Power Rangers villain mode, Branagh and Thompson making Shakespeare seem so natural. Great palate cleanser from the run of South Korean dark thrillers I've been on.

FW: The Lion in Winter (1968)

A movie engineered for Hepburn and O'Toole to chew the scenery up and spit it out. It's Succession set in Medieval England; intense family relationships, a struggle to succeed the throne, and a black, farcical tone that doesn't shy away from the absurdity of it all.

First watch. Hitchcock in pure "just two hotties who want to bone" mode. The cat burglar plot takes a backseat to Grant and Kelly standing around in Europe and burning a hole through the screen with their charisma. Pure, breezy fun.

Iconic for a reason. Not sure why everyone seems to think Crowe's performance is weak, I think a lot of the non-verbal acting he's doing is pretty fantastic. Reed is clearly the standout though, holy hell. Ridley remains the GOAT.

Four favourites by Scorsese.

After Hours
Taxi Driver
The Colour of Money
Silence

They're all pretty great, but apart from the Kalifa sequence the rest of GP doesn't really do anything for me.

Leo (2023) dir. Lokesh Kanagaraj

I thought this was pretty fun! The fights in the first half are fantastic. Feel like it loses momentum in the second half but Vijay and Sanjay Dutt manage to hold it together with their charisma.

Withnail and I (1987)

Humour as dry as the desert and endlessly quotable. Essentially just a story about two drunk idiots who try to go on a countryside holiday and everything that goes wrong from there. Still an incredibly poignant ending.

Only God Forgives (2013)

A movie that seemed impenetrable on first watch but was so fascinating I've watched it many times. A hypnotic Freudian deconstruction of masculinity, revenge, and hubris.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)

Not just one of the greatest low-budget action films ever, but a Lynchian journey into the unconscious, the effect of the military industrial complex on the psyche, and the meaning of consciousness itself.

Also the fights are sick AF.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

It's Raiders of the bloody Lost Ark.

Creed (2015)

Life-affirming stuff. Coogler firing on all cylinders, the cast giving it everything, the soundtrack, THAT montage. A modern classic that almost outshines the entire series.

Rush Hour (1998)

It's not my favourite Jackie but it is the one that introduced me to him and in doing so to all HK cinema, so it's always going to have a special place in my heart.

The Exorcist III (1990)

Only watched this for the first time last year but I honestly think it's one of the best horror movies ever made. The dialogue is incredible, the scares are phenomenal, and the visuals have the impact of a symbolist freight train.

The Addams Family (1991)

I think the original has become unfairly underrated compared to the sequel. For my money, this one has a darker sense of humour and the production design and cinematography are just astounding. Incredible performances from everyone, they're all batting 100.

Fish Tank (2009)

I watched this in a film class and really fell in love with it. Andrea Arnolds does such a stellar job of communicating the subjective world of her protagonist as she navigates council estate life and an affair with her mother's boyfriend (an early Michael Fassbender role).

Vengeance! (1970)

My favourite Chang Cheh I've watched so far. Brutal heroic bloodshed flick that hooks up David Chiang to look like the coolest MFer alive.
November 10, 2024 at 3:47 AM
Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Hard to decide which of the Cornetto Trilogy is my favourite but this one launched my interest in filmmaking in a major way. Incredibly tight story structure that manages to really make you feel for the characters amid all the gags.

Predator (1987)

A perfect blend of action, horror, and sci fi - Basically everything I love in one movie. Subverts the standard 80s action movie and turns its invincible muscle-bound heroes into powerless slasher victims.

Some of the greatest lines of dialogue in cinema.

The Red Shoes (1948)

Have to thank Scorsese for putting me onto Powell & Press Burger, and specifically for one of the most beautiful and inventive films in existence.

Mortal Kombat (1995)

Probably the movie that started my love for action and martial arts. Still great fun.
