The US is an exceedingly concentrated aviation market - the top 4 carriers capture >75% of capacity. Where do the others fly? And who are they? Inspired by #Avelo Airlines' network consolidation, I looked at the small(-ish) US passenger airlines on Substack: domsipinski.substack.com/p/weekly-ins...
Weekly Insight || The US beyond the big four
Avelo Airlines will focus on secondary airports on the US East Coast. Where do other US airlines look for market niches amid an unprecedented level of market concentration?

How do Wizz Air's and Spirit's fleet cost cutting differ? The former has to stick to A321neo due to capacity and environmental cost, the latter can shrink with A320s: domsipinski.substack.com/p/expensive-...
Expensive but indispensable: Wizz Air's A321neo conundrum
The European low-cost carrier is looking for ways to reduce its fleet cost base, but is under a different situation than US' Spirit Airlines. And doesn't seem to need A320s much outside Romania.

Did you know that the average number of seats in a United Airlines A320 or B737 family aircraft based at Chicago O'Hare is a full 9.2% lower than of the same aircraft based out of Washington Dulles? This week, I look into United's "upgauging": domsipinski.substack.com/p/upgauging-... #airlines
"Upgauging", or how US airlines squeeze more out of domestic flights
After decades of operating lots of smaller narrowbodies, US airlines are now "upgauging" to larger aircraft.

"Private class" flights with four A220-300s (later also A321neo), starting in 2H 2027 in the US - that's Magnifica Air's plan. I talked to the execs at the #nbaa2025 and dove deeper on my substack. Why are all-business-class airlines rare? open.substack.com/pub/domsipin... #airline #airtransport
Magnifica Air and all-business-class airlines
What are the challenges in running an airline operating aircraft with all-business-class seating?

This is a huge red flag for a crucial, non-political federal agency.

Unlike NHTSA, NTSB has pulled no punches asserting that Tesla Autopilot is dangerously designed. Musk once hung up on the NTSB Chair: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
The NTSB says it will no longer email news outlets or reporters with notifications of upcoming press conferences, including those on plane crashes in Washington and Philadelphia.

Instead, all notifications will be made on X.

We're filing a FOIA to find out more about the change in policy.

NEW: Europe’s aviation industry plans to double passenger traffic in 2050 and will deplete its carbon budget as early as 2026.

This will be despite efficiency improvements and the uptake of sustainable fuels.

Last month I asked CEO Greg Anderson of Allegiant Air if they had sights on any new airports where noöne flies, in typical Allegiant fashion. I guess Gulf Shores, AL is the answer - a tiny regional airport with no current scheduled services becomes Allegiant's new destination with 5 routes.
Allegiant Air announces MASSIVE 44 new route expansion:

• Gulf Shores (GUF) to Houston (HOU)
• GUF to Bentonville (XNA)
• GUF to Kansas City (MCI)
• GUF to Cincinnati (CVG)
• GUF to Belleville (BLV)
• Colorado Springs (COS) to Phoenix (AZA)
• COS to St. Petersburg (PIE)
• COS to Orange County (SNA)

Life in the Russian-speaking town of Narva in Estonia isn't easy - the community can't escape geopolitics and is often seen as a security threat. I report on how cultural initiatives help the locals regain a sense of community and rebuild local ties.
