Typically, minors need to either already be emancipated (a separate legal process), or have their guardian’s consent to get married. It is the second case that I am talking about.

Ah! The “Shirley exception”! It would make sense, but laws are frequently illogical. It depends upon the state. Some states have “emancipation by marriage”, but others do not. It’s really shocking when you look at the list.

Emancipation is yet another legal hurdle that you have to clear if you are underage. We shouldn’t let adults marry minors. Full stop. I grew up in Mississippi. Go take a look at what the law is in Mississippi right now, in 2025. You won’t like what you find.

No, they are correct. Most states have an exception for statutory rape if the victim is married to the perpetrator:

I don’t care how mature you are for your age. If you can’t walk away, that is not a partnership; that is ownership. That is why these men pursue girls under 18. It is so much harder to fight for yourself if you need someone else to support you before you can begin.
