To lift others (people, lovers, states) like kites through mountain air is a rare skill.

To elevate the mundane, to inspire the average.

Dr. Suess in the bad times, plucked Jasmine in the good.

I wish to seduce the world, and you should too.

Over time their existence was largely erased, due to secrecy, social stigma with their associations, and colonial purges.

This reduced their legacy only to whispers by those who knew the truth.

Renaissance women, they proved intelligence & elegance could co-exist.

Seduction is the mastery of connection & influence.

Masters of the arts, agents of cultural preservation. Monroe in a sari but better, iconic - balanced.

Lavish maang tikka & haath phool jewellery, lehenga outfits & more - they shaped modern Indian fashion.

As well as classical dance (Thumri) and the expressive arts tied to Hindustani music, poetry, storytelling, & breaking stereotypes.

Feared & (foolishly) fawned over, looked down upon yet respected, these women held a unique position in society.

To be a courtesan meant brand tarnishment forever- for nearly unlimited access & power.

A price to pay to play the game of power, for none have ever left unscathed

Amassing great wealth on their own, some had mansions & servants (up to 200 at times!)

They invested in charities, art and culture, and even paid taxes (in the highest bracket!)

How Indian courtesans entered the biz varied greatly
Some were born into it, some were sold or "gifted" into it, & others entered out of free will. Risks were high, but the upsides were endless.

Many managed to secure royal status by eventually marrying into nobility (happily)
July 20, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Missions included intelligence gathering in royal courts (posing as entertainers), seducing/bribing officials to test their loyalty to the state -

- influencing foreign courts & more (assassinations in extreme cases.)

Swaying culture & state through wit & tongue (mostly.)
July 20, 2025 at 3:38 PM
This allowed them to have access to anyone & everyone.

Even hosting intellectual gatherings ("salons") where the rich & powerful could come & exchange ideas on politics & culture.

Unknowingly being monitored & influenced by India's elite operators.

But what of the missions?
July 20, 2025 at 3:38 PM
Like the Randa class. Which monitored temples & local authorities (compared to the state level.)

Ironically, regular women's role in society at this point had diminished.

Now, courtesans were richer, independent & intellectually superior compared to even the common man!

State-funded, Ganika were the elite class (in looks & brain), trained in statecraft, espionage & cultural representation.

The Rupajiva (privately funded) were second in command and focused on tactical seduction through song & dance (yes, really.)

With 7 other "lower" classes.
July 20, 2025 at 3:37 PM
Entertainers could move between worlds.

Their work meant they naturally had access to elite circles (kings, ministers, nobles)

They mastered 64 arts that made them naturals at disarming & extracting information from anyone (you'll see in a sec)

And the government liked this

The Arthashastra was THE manual of the time on how to run a well-organised state empire - and the courtesans were in it.

Declared as effective tools in India's vision of an ideal state, due to their unique role in luxury, intelligence & diplomacy.

And it makes sense.
July 20, 2025 at 3:37 PM
These women weren't performers, but operators.

The mission above was 1 of many during India's Golden Age.

Sophistication & global influence at stake, India needed those born in the dark, license to charm, who could topple enemy nations without force - eloquently.

Ba-dum drum heartbeat loudens, she reaches the general.

Songbird singing him into submission, sleight of hand slips poison into his chalice unnoticed.

Eyeing her escape, clutching him like fate. His heart slows, her smile grows.

These are the Courtesans of Ancient India.
July 20, 2025 at 3:37 PM
Grand banquet, crowds, glowing laughter.

Pure gold chalice cupped by the impure enemy general.

Dancing, drinks, impending death wrapped in a silk sari.

Gold anklets singing her approach, Madana beauty, feet like Icarus, as the general eyes her. But she eyes his chalice.

Imagine this: You need to kill a man.

Not just any man - a king who commands 20,000 soldiers.

How do you do it in his fortress, surrounded by his most loyal allies?

Here’s how:

Love lays within the fold of perception, akin to beauty. Etheral, bold, worth a thousand ships

But it must be respected, trained for (like school

Love = creativity & seduction (conscious connection.)

Make friends, put in effort, show up with heart - you'll be alright <3

6. Illusion of self love

Most: "Love yourself first"

Many wait to be "complete" before opening up at all ➡️ But your self-esteem develops through others (reflected appraisal theory)

Practice kindness, trust others with love in earnest

POV: When ur too scared to open up ↓
