THREAD: Nine years, two months and eight days ago I arrived in Pismo Beach, on the California coast, half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It had been my dream to live in wine country and to be able to walk out my door and go for a run on the beach each day.

THREAD 1/10: Trump tried to make a deal with Putin to split Ukraine's territory and resources. Trump's objective was to try to shame Zelenskyy into surrendering, not just to Putin but to the US as well.

Nobody wants to hear this, but it needs to be said. The Jack Smith report reminds us that the defining failure of the Biden Administration was the failure to "preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution of the United States. The greatest threat we faced when Biden took office...

I can say Fuck You Donald Trump.

They may be richer but I am more powerful. And that is a trade I would make every single day.

"The insurrectionists failed in the moment, but they set off a series of events that transformed US Constitutional democracy by upending the core principle that no man is above the law."

And virtually an entire political party helped them do it.
Trump and Co’s efforts will be hindered by infighting and incompetence. Hopelessness at this point is unnecessary defeatism.
But still, this anniversary marks a dark day in US history. Unlike the forces that attacked America at Fort Sumter, Pearl Harbor, or the Twin Towers, the Jan. 6 attackers won.

I've been on the road, enjoying parts of the world where US politics are inappurtenant. This is my new friend Tequila, who I cantered with across Playa Conchal, Costa Rica.

Taking a break and getting away from all the insanity, whether for the short term or a longer one, is quite invigorating.

Back in 1998 and 1999, when we came to understand the potential disaster posed by the year 2000 computer bug, I worked with Peter de Jager to create a massive global public awareness campaign to fix it. It worked! This time, there is no fix.
