It has been a great DGfS conference last week in Mainz! I hope I could show that Syriac can contribute to our understanding of cyclic phonology.

More than 40 downloads in just 2 days! So far and by far, the most downloaded paper of the volume. A big thank you to all who've read (or are reading) the paper!

This is Charlie, one of my parents' two cats. We're lucky no-one is allergic here. But if someone would, ... 😅

At least for Germans: Streitberg's dictionary. What's the standard dictionary for Gothic-English?

Reminds me of the Tengwar vocalisation of Latin script for 'Lord of the Rings' maps, at least for the vowel A.

AFAIK there is only little known about the Guanche language. :/ Some words (i.a. some numbers) are transmitted. But it's not much. There is the hypothesis that it belongs to the Berber language family. Some years ago, I bought this book for tourists^^ Though this is not at all half decent 😅

#Romanian saying of the day:
Soare cu dinți.
'Sun with teeth.'
Said when it's sunny but very cold outside. I.e. with clattering teeth.

This slide is from my phonology class this semester. In my preparations, I've accidently learned that the meaning of Māori *moana* is 'sea'! Didn't know that before! I suppose it's similar/the same in other Oceanic languages.

So maybe something like yqḥ /yiqqaḥ/ 'he takes' from *lqḥ? Could be part of a name.

This is from a conference. Here, I got to know some new people. So, I secretly wrote down their names. What you see: (1) šmā ('name'): aģmīn ('Armin'?), šmā brītonyā. (2) hēđēr (meant: Heather Newell)

The Š could be a ḥ if you put it upside-down. And I don't know what the vertical line right of it is. Concerning the square or "w" for M, it's hard to say whether the stroke above is a damage or not. I'd say the N is pretty clear. ...

In my former linguistics department (with focus on German), this poster hangs right before the office of my former professor (and employer).

What do you think is the language WALS calls "Gwari"? The same applies to its major reference, Hyman & Magaji (1970).

The conlang material from your website was a primary foundation of my master thesis in linguistics. Without the pronunciation guides and the excerpts from the respective screenplays, it would have been veeery difficult. 🙏🏽

A slide from my current linguistics class "The Syllable". I try to show my students both the respective basics (mainly stuff from the 80s) AND current research, such as this map taken from @ianjoo.bsky.social & Hsu (2024). I love their database, the Phonotacticon!

Since June we have a cat! Say hi to Kēli! Although her name means 'cat' in High Valyrian, she likes Aramaic, Hebrew and theoretical phonology very much as one can see by means of my books.

Great idea with Eritrean/Ethiopian cuisine at a wine festival! But I wish they would have written "Eritrean" or "Ethiopian" not "African". It's like saying "paella and black pudding belong to the same cuisine since both are European dishes."

At day 1 of OCP21 (Old World Conference in Phonology, just last week in Leipzig), we had a walk across the southern cemetery. Among the many linguists/philologists buried there (e.g. K. Brugmann, W. Streitberg, E. Sievers) is also Rudolf Kittel, most famous for his edition of the Hebrew bible.
