Once again, I used my sunbum gorilla keychain as a model. It was a busy semester, so was glad for the excuse to actually draw and paint a little. Hopefully this summer I will get to do a lot more, as I’m back working on the @wingfeathersaga !

Mine was a blues club. My brush work was an absolute mess, but I think the demo gets the point across.

The project was inspired by James Gurney’s painting colossal Mario’s into the background of landscapes. The goal was to teach the students how to use color, light and shadow to show atmospheric perspective.

my chosen object was, once again, my very cool little keychain of the sunbum gorilla mascot, towering over #forthbridge .

My chosen object was a keychain that I picked up on a vacation. It’s a plastic figurine of the @sunbum mascot. I see it every time I go on a vacation in a beachy area, and honestly, I’m a fan, it’s a great example of #shapelanguage in #characterdesign .

My chosen target object was a little keychain of a gorilla mascot from a line of sunscreen products. I started with a red underpainting to map out the shadow values, some yellow to warm up the lit areas, and then I paint it over with a wash of green.

this was my quick in-class #demopainting , and again I’m pretty happy with the results for someone who doesn’t use traditional media hardly ever, but the lesson was more about how complementary colors work in our perception of light and shadow.

The layering of colors was in a bit of a different order and the digital version, but the concept is the same, that because of #simultaneouscontrast , shadows are perceived by humans to have a touch of the #complimentarycolor of the light source and/or local color of the object.
