The next thing I had my students do was to digitally paint a very much enlarged version of their chosen object into the distant background of a chosen photograph. For my in-class demo, I used a photo from a trip my wife and I took to Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

Here’s the #digitalpainting version of my demo from the previous post. The assignment was for my students to paint a chosen object from observation with the surface color and properties of a 🍏 (painted previously), to show the role that complementary colors play and how we perceive light and shadow.

After they were done painting 🍏 , my students next assignment was to transfer the color and lighting properties of their 🍏 to another small object of their choice, starting again with a #gouachepainting.

Other than a tiny bit of watercolor sketching, I haven’t so much as touched a tube of paint since College. I’ve been all digital since then. Imagine the fear when I was told I had to teach a color theory class where painting in traditional media was like half of it (as it should be).

At last, with #WingfeatherSaga S2 out in the wild I can finally show my first Fang of Dang! Greasle (orig. named Squattles) is a beast without yeast, a Fang who could have used some more baking time in the ol’ melding chamber. But he’s mine, and I love him just the same.

Another completely different #WingfeatherSaga #characterdesign : this was my take on the mysterious freedom fighter Gammon, who for mysterious reasons ALSO looked more like Inego Montoya, less like the Dread Pirate Wesley.

I’m glad #WingfeatherSaga S2-4 is out, because I’ve wanted to show my version of the Florid Sword #characterdesign for ages. These sketches were my take, but ultimately he wound up more dread pirate Wesley, less Inigo Montoya. But I like them, AND they did keep my #sworddesign:

Don’t go killing me or anything, but one of my big bucket list items is to have my work featured in an art-of book, and here it is, just in time for Christmas! Also a big congratulations to all of my hardworking Wingfeather co-artists also featured therein! Amazing, amazing work, all y’all.

This is how I always thought (X-men) Cyclops’ gear could work, at least according to headcannon (get it) I've wanted to try my hand at redesigning him for a while, not sure why? I also always thought he would be more fun if he were a bit of a dork, hope that comes across.
