i'm leading an informal course with some friends that's devoted to the entirety of human history in iberia.

here's a list of the coolest shit i've learned:

1) the "ivory lady" burial of the valencina de la concepción (outside of seville). dated to ~3,000–2,800 BCE. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The partisan divide has grown, too. The wealthiest 100 tended to give more to Republicans than to Democrats before last year. But giving to the GOP spiked in 2024, with *84%* of donations going to back Republicans or conservative PACs.

easy response: "so, what you are saying is that you should never have been born in the US because your grandfather should not have been allowed to move to north america to pursue a phd. do i have that right?"
Nalin Haley: "It's irresponsible to have legal immigration."

Hugely important new data here, I need time to digest it (🙃), but this kind of detailed contextual work is EXACTLY what we need to avoid stereotypes that #Neanderthal body processing & cannibalism were simply "brutal massacres"
Did Neandertals choose their prey when practicing cannibalism?🍖

Check out our new study, just published in Scientific Reports - @natureportfolio.nature.com!

We provide the strongest evidence to date for a highly selective cannibalism at the end of Neandertal lineage, 41-45.000 years ago.

concerning
"It’s hard to overstate how unlikely it is that a business with almost $200bn of annual revenue would grow at a rate of over 60 per cent. Yet such are the fantastical finances of Nvidia." from an excellent FT Lex note www.ft.com/content/bd6f...
Nvidia’s AI supremacy is a weapon that cuts both ways
While the chipmaker is the big winner from the booming technology, it is singularly exposed to changing expectations

it's gotten to a point where humans have so much data and information stored in different forms, that they don't know what to do with it all. so they just feed it to a giant processor that predicts what words goes next and they treat that processor as their new god

my crackpot theory on the speed of history (and time) accelerating:

- more people means more interactions. more interactions means the exchange of more information. this breeds greater and greater efforts to ease the exchange of information (i.e. written language in whatever form)

Trump has murdered at least 83 people with extrajudicial military strikes on alleged drug-trafficking boats.

He needs to face consequences for this.

His secretary of DHHS, RFK Jr., will kill several orders of magnitude more with this disinformation.
This is completely disgusting. Today, the CDC updated their vaccine safety page. It now says:

“The claim "vaccines do not cause autism" is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism”.

the dumbest insult you see on this website is when someone says, "they are posting this to get attention." and you are on a social media website posting constantly, why exactly? for your own personal edification?

been studying the iron age mediterranean, and there's a trend in the literature away from seeing the spread of phoenician and greek communities as "colonization" and towards more nuanced understandings that bring to mind "globalization" & highlight differences with early modern colonial projects 1/
