Anthropologist/Folklorist researching the Dodleston Messages from a pragmatic perspective... cos, honestly, its a bit whacky!

I often think about this as I cook and EVERY recipe I make from anywhere (except China/Japan) requires some kind of tomato product... they're so ubiquitous now!

It definitely looks 'real' but that really doesn't sound like a goblin (I don't know what a goblin sounds like, but its not that!) I'd assume some animal with mange stuck in a hole... and is possibly what gave rise to the legend.

I remember this one... definitely contributed to my developing OCD!

After I've figured out how to tame WordPress of course. Seems to have fallen prey to the general enshittifaction of previously useful tools!!!

They're fascinating because their oddness and pointlessness asks questions about the nature of true paranormal events or about the type of people who would make them up. Neither have easy answers.

These are the stories that fascinate me. I know high strangeness is a great term, but this is not even that 'high'. I look to Mothman a fair bit for these things as that was also essentially pointless and just kind of accepted as normal at the time.

And it doesn't follow received poltergeist narratives (if you ignore the terrible graphics). Its just a load of weird stuff and the lights are quite unique.

So this sits alongside Dodleston - 1980s, not a usual story, completely pointless, generally ignored. Just weird stuff happening.

But what makes me think its not a hoax is that it seems to be so little known. They evidently made a documentary in the mid 90s (based on hair styles) but no one benefitted from it. It didn't provide fame or fortune. Not even attention if it wasn't even released until 2023.

I'd assume that if it was real it would be better known as it injures a man, which is rare, and if it was a hoax it would be better known as it would have been quite audacious to fake a poltergeist hanging. Its quite complex, loads of witnesses, loads of footage.

No one could decide how to say it! Pedro, Paydro, Peeedro... all from the same people. And they lived there! California... not like they're nowhere near Spanish speakers. I could understand it in Glasgow!

He is English and pronounces it 'San Peeedro'... brilliant!

(If it doesn't, or you're prone to MH issues go see your Dr)

No one warns you about the affects of GAs! Usually people are too distracted or on pain meds so don't notice, but GAs can cause quite a substantial period of depression/lack of mojo. Someone literally turned your body off! It'll come back soon.

Tried to read it as a young teen (inspired by Kate Bush). Could not understand how such a revered author could make such a rooky mistake. Surely writing 101 is 'make the characters no one can actually see distinguishable from one another'.

But there is something in that as its a magnification of how these stories and theories spread and how one comes to be a 'specialist' in an area that doesn't have 'official' specialists and how beliefs are created and strengthened.

(The description claims the Documentary solves the case - it doesn't, and neither does it claim to - but it does provide some compelling and ultimately sensible theories)

and become a spectacle (e.g. Gef or Enfield). Dodleston just seemed to attract a general shrug from everyone involved!
January 6, 2025 at 1:53 PM
One of the things I find fascinating about Dodleston is the length of the activity with no Streisand effect involved - it was essentially ignored so why bother? So many unexplained phenomena are either 'debunked' quickly encouraging further investigation (e.g. Dyatlov), or go fully to the press
