Crikey, setting up Ko-Fi is a massive faff isn’t it? Rather than a form to put everything in, they send you emails with individual questions! I can’t imagine anyone would tip me… just seemed worth a punt to cover some research expenses!

Having another go at sharing this as I confused myself last time and just want to see if it works…

If you’d like to tip me for my work at any point to help toward research expenses you can buy me a coffee at Ko-Fi:

Been doing a bit of website maintenance (well, trying to figure out WordPress which seems to have hidden all the vaguely useful features) and have popped in a link for Ko-Fi if you want to chuck me a tip to put towards books and research expenses.

Could this be the source of the mothman sightings? Same time and weremoths aren't exactly common...
Inspector Cushing is on it when Flemyng turns his lovely daughter Ventham into a bloodhungry weremoth. Delightfully daft with a cracking cast. 1968.

I am aware that others are searching for the manuscript produced by Tomas and left in Oxford in 1548ish. I am not.

While it would be great if it was found, my experience with MSS material suggests that if it did exist it is unlikely to have survived. Its not a good use of resources.

Encountering a lot of snippiness about trying to find records that would prove TVP isn't a work of fiction. I only have anecdotes and a book to work from and the claims are scientifically impossible. Any investigation has to include skepticism when there are so few sources.

If a terrace house is haunted by a spirit/demon from before the terrace is built, why isn't it next door as well?

I've lived in houses with spirits, but all were detached and the spirits post dated the building of the house. So why don't old ghosts travel like mice do?

@uncannykernow.bsky.social I'm from the Isle of Man and we have many similarities to Cornwall (but were more problematic for the Methodists!) Excited to hear how similar the Manx/Cornish are for general weirdness. You might have piskies, but we've got Gef!

Rather a successful visit to Hampton court, which told me a lot about how we view Tudors in mediated/curated spaces. Not least that it was really quite boring! Its just Henry VIII and tapestries.

I realised I'm not researching Tudors, but the 1980s idea of Tudors... (cont.)

My dad used to tell a joke, “What’s the difference between a red letterbox and an elephant’s [butt]?”

“I don’t know?”

“That’s ok, I’ll mail it myself.”

Don’t know why I’m reminded about that alongside current global politics

Tomorrow I'm going to check out Hampton Court, see if I can't get a feel for the whole Tudor, court thing and thought this might be a good opportunity to explain a bit about my methods (and I'm bored on a coach so...

I should note that I have visited Hampton Court before. It was 1985 and left me with a lifelong phobia of peacocks, so this is a big deal! I am hoping the weather will keep the peacocks at bay!
Was scratching around for something to do in London on Wed and decided Hampton Court Palace seemed a good call. Try and get into Lukas' head - and see if I can find out what 'access to the library at court' really means. We *should* be able to track down the real Lukas Wainman if he existed.

I had intended to do reviews of the various online documentaries relating to Dodleston (YouTube and podcasts) but there are just so many now, 95% of them say exactly the same thing - a weak precis of TVP.

The need to be on radio/telly has superseded any urge to impart information.

Did Gef choose the Isle of Man (coming from Delhi via the Crooked Man in the Holmes story) because we have no snakes?

And did Voirrey read Holmes? Because mongoose were not a go to animal in Dalby!
The victory is only a matter of quickness of eye and quickness of foot–snake’s blow against mongoose’s jump–and as no eye can follow the motion of a snake’s head when it strikes, this makes things much more wonderful than any magic herb.

Gef was a dude. The film with Simon Pegg was a disaster and I was offended on many levels. I'm still convinced Gef appears in the Sherlock Holmes story of the Crooked Man...
#WyrdWednesday This is Gef, the “little extra, extra clever mongoose" who lived with the Irving family on their isolated farm, Doarlish Cashen, The Isle of Man. He spoke (often vulgarly) in a shrill voice, sang, and reported regional gossip by hitching rides on buses. Known as "The Dalby Spook."

As a Manxie (who learned of the Dodleston Messages in the Isle of Man) I can't help but draw comparisons with Gef. The incidents are very different but the level of weirdness, remote location and unexpected people involved strikes a chord.

Thoughts on Dodleston and the Hellier documentary: 🧵

I'm not sure how much I believe of what is going on in the documentary, but it does refer to lots of interesting books and concepts so is a handy reference to have on in the background.

I may be slow getting stuff written as I am still problematising, but I have been exploring Dodleston for a number of years (2018 onward) and developing ideas and questions.

If you'd like to discuss something beyond a retelling of TVP then hit me up. Podcasts, YouTube or just by email.

The traditional Hunting of the Wren - 'Hela'r Dryw' in Welsh - is seldom practiced these days, but continued in parts of Pembrokeshire in particular until well into the 20th century.
