Well, income tax and rates were higher as a proportion, councils could probably afford street cleaners, gardeners, pot hole repairs, libraries etc
But pollution was much much higher

True, especially the more modern ones, my old church is now used more frequently than it used to be in the week, but less often on a Sunday. It’s also not suitable for youth clubs, social meetings. Plus the older generation I knew were hardened to being cold.

Did a study on heating churches many years. Very awkward, only need heating occasionally, large heat inertia , massive space, and not much if any roof insulation. At the time my conclusion was infra red, but they look awful.

Road tax (sic) is a very unfair thing. I’ve a classic car in the garage, 3000 mile/yr, £360. My main road car which is bigger, heavier, more powerful 8000 mile/yr, £20.
But as I’m retired I rarely use the roads at peak times, so to be fair road pricing needs to be introduced
