Nests on grasslands in and near Mongolia/Inner Mongolia, and spends winter in Australia. Hard to see in between, as it is capable of long migratory flights, maybe directly from Australia to Mongolia in spring.

As some sort of comparison: shot from Beidaihe, east of Beijing in mid-March 1985, when I first arrived with friends to do a bird survey. That's sea ice - so freezes at below 0C; and had been typical there.
