Yes, the Pokemon event is cool, but THIS made me emotional.

1,000 GATHERED IN OAK RIDGE TO DEFEND THE FIRST AMENDMENT (FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) JUNE 14, 2025 Oak Ridge, TN - On Saturday, around 1,000 people gathered along the Oak Ridge Turnpike in one of the city's largest displays of civic action. The peaceful rally, organized by the Anderson County Democratic Party, was a clear and visible stand for the First Amendment - and against the rising tide of political intimidation. "The First Amendment wasn't meant to protect the powerful from criticism. It was meant to protect the people when they rise," said Chase Lindsey. "Our rights don't belong to one side. They belong to everyone willing to stand up and use them." Recent attempts by local leaders to dismiss or discredit the rally only reinforced its purpose: to make clear that free speech, peaceful assembly, and public accountability are not up for debate. Across the street, a small group of Trump supporters attempted to provoke and film attendees. "They came looking for a reaction," Lindsey said. "What they got was a safe space - the same one they'd deny us. That's the irony. The First Amendment protects them too, even as they mock those of us using it." The crowd - made up of veterans, workers, students, clergy, and families - lined the street with handmade signs, American flags, and a shared message: we will not be intimidated into silence. Saturday's rally was more than a protest. It was a warning - and a promise. That in Tennessee, people are paying attention. That showing up - peacefully and proudly - isn't a partisan act. And that those trying to erode democratic norms will meet communities willing to stand in the heat for what's right. "We're not waiting on Nashville. We're not waiting on Washington," Lindsey said. "We're doing it ourselves, right here in Anderson County."
