The D ration was basically a bitter chocolate bar with a high melting point. The bar was deliberately de-sweetened to discourage soldiers from snacking on them.

One example of this is the infamous D ration emergency chocolate bar from WW2 which has evolved into the modern granola/energy bar in every gas station you walk into.
