Has the definition of “sort of” changed since I retired? When I worked in communications, it meant “not exactly.” Now I hear “sort of” used in WAY too many sentences (is it the new “Um”?). Why is “sort of” being used when the meaning clearly being conveyed is “precisely” or “exactly”?

The tea party hijacked the church after 9/11. They used the shock of the attack as the catalyst to finally bind Christianity to nationalism in a sick state of obligate mutualism.
MANY Christians left the church in the last 25 years because of the hatred. It remains to be seen if they will survive.
