Companies should consider going back to paper resumes delivered by mail as the only way to apply. Postage stamp, handwritten envelope, signed cover letter - combine small cost with proof of work and proof you're in the country. Just stick it in a scanner when it arrives

Typical poet behavior, same story since the beginning of time

The real treasure was always the friends we blocked along the way

I don't expect to get much right & won't feel bad for being wrong. What a ride! Up there with Twin Peaks, The Return & True Detective

P.S. Mammalians Nurturable is where they're going to raise babies. Goats are a just temporary placeholder

P.P.S. One of the principals will die

We are living through a cultural revolution. Just with less violence than the original (for now)

A savvy car company CEO or a regional car dealer would already be astroturfing a Tesla boycott at any other time in history. (The copy writes itself!) But oddly not now

Yes, many people go at the problem head on. Unfortunately, this often leads to second order effects that make matters worse, sometimes catastrophically so.

(I come from a country that has a proud century-long tradition of making this mistake over and over again.)

Sometimes I think denial is a core founding principle of this site

So far I am at 4 plagues on my Trump plague tracker: measles in Texas, bird flu in cattle, screwworm north of Panama, and planes doing unplanelike things

I think it's very good to advocate for one's rights and there are savvy ways of doing this. Not sure I can always tell when the advocates have gone too far, but I can definitely tell when they've lost every branch of the government

Well it probably wasn't just the "attitude" but regardless, I wish you good luck in your pursuit. If you think the best way to get people to quit smoking is to go up to them on the street and yell, "stop smoking!" in their faces, then you can do that as long as your ducking skills permit.

The phrase "it would be better to not oppose _______ so zealously” is often a useful guide. The blank can be filled with many terrible vices: bigotry, drugs, prostitution, heresy, alcohol, littering, etc. And as a parent one surely learns the utility of a lighter touch in such matters

If I came across as hectoring, I apologize. I should have found better phrasing.

But I take issue w/the use of "moralistic." People's thoughts are their business. My hectoring, if any, is goal oriented: don't let the evil in. But someone did. Statistics suggest it was well-intentioned people

It's not at all what I said or what I seek.

I do think however that the reward for all your efforts and conviction is that the bigots' power increased tenfold, and if that doesn't make you pause & wonder whether the path you thought was shortest actually leads to your destination, it's not great.

I guess if we disagree on whether the words and actions (incl. symbolic) of the left wing drove enough undecided voters into Trump's arms to decide the election, it's hard to debate things downstream of that
February 25, 2025 at 2:50 PM
And how is that plan working out? Last I checked, the actual, unabashed bigots now have more power than they've had in generations
February 25, 2025 at 2:43 PM
I see no contradiction

Right-wing authoritarianism is indeed a greater threat, and I might have agreed with this, had I seen some amount of self-reflection from the lefty cosplayers & schoolmarms since November. But instead of such mea culpas I've mostly heard things like "what a bigoted country"

Putting aside whether the guy I'm talking about (me) is made uncomfortable by some people (maybe raving lunatics on the subway), consider the degree of electoral success that telling moderates what thoughts to have (or not) has brought you. Under what measure is this a worthy practice to continue?
