3/ The most compelling part of my visit was seeing the poems carved into the wooden walls. The immigrant detainees composed poems, abiding by Chinese poetic structures, and then carefully and artfully carved them into the walls.

1/ It seems that not a lot of people know about Angel Island. Equivalencies have been drawn to Ellis Island, but Angel Island was more about keeping immigrants (primarily Asians) out, while Ellis Island brought people in (primarily European).
