Hi new followers, guess it's time for a new intro post. I’m David, been working as indiedev ~15 years, made a few games, I like coding my own frameworks in SDL/C++. More "recently" I've been doing contract work using Unity/GM2 etc for consoles, so been vverry slowly working on my own new game.
I once worked in a place where we sadly didn’t managed to ship anything in 4-5 years, imagine 17!
I know people who have spent their entire career on an unreleased game, and some who worked on it, left to ship another game, came back, left again to ship another game, and came back again.
Unbelievably, 17 years after its original announcement, Ubisoft appears to still be hiring for Beyond Good and Evil 2

bumped into this article yesterday and I think it's interesting and wanted to share, always cool to read about older games code. fabiensanglard.net/q... #gamedev

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.

Square says game key cards are due to speed but ... Dragon Quest 1&2 remake is complete in cart for slower Switch 1 sys, Switch 2 is key-card and also that uglier (due to noticed) box. Also you can’t upgrade. SW2 was supposed to be the no-brainer pick for everything now.

A non problem these days in modern systems, but back in the day, having a game controller wire across the living room was a problem (once saw friends dog making a PS1 fly off the shelf). When OG Xbox launched the Duke controller that cord that would detached on a pull felt like a game changer!

24 hour format is so much nicer than 12 with am/pm suffix.

I think there’s room for pirate themed horror movies and games.

Bugs are bugs, but some of the most interesting ones are the “works like this by design” but are perceived by players as a bug, as it behaves differently from what they expect. “Playing it wrong” is not a good argument, so there’s more learning involved while fixing it than just broken code.

Unreal blueprints being binary is kinda of a weird decision. Generally speaking I think binaries during development is terrible for ControlVersion. How are teams handling this large scale, the good old “file lock”?

Helped with some code for this one in last year. check it out, it’s very inspired by one of my fav consoles social network.

Unreal has a KINDA_SMALL_NUMBER float macro define, so we can compare against small numbers close to 0 and I found the name funny because I imagined the dev conversation.

"So how big is the number?"
"kinda small"

wfh will do that to your brain.

This is such an idiotic solution! moving Windows frontend components to web-tech was a mistake and it shows. Tech debt must be pilling up at absurd levels and they can’t keep up with the sluggish code anymore. And faster hardware can’t do miracles.
Microsoft says it will always run Windows 11 File Explorer in the background to load it faster
Microsoft admitted that File Explorer is slow and can take longer than usual to load, and it's going to fix it in the next Windows 11 update.

do yourself a favor, install File Pilot and "Windows explorer" becomes usable again. So far the only caveat I found is I can't access network drives directly by UNC, only if mapped on Windows. https://filepilot.tech/

probably best to hold on updates on windows11 for now while they patch it up

What is the games equivalent to movies “it’s all CGI, they don’t do practical stunts/effects anymore, so it doesn’t age as well”?

I’m fine with the Nintendo game releases where they drop the game complete on day one and only update crucial issues. But weirdly, Mario Kart World, considering what it seemed to be about and the scope, seems kind of abandoned? This never crossed my mind with MK8, even before all the DLCs.

Unity and Unreal are partnering up ... for Unity games to be published directly inside Fortnite "metaverse". Not really sure what this means for Unity in long run (for Unreal it doesn't hurt). interesting collaboration but doesn't change anything for majority of current devs?
Unity devs will be able to publish games in Fortnite after Epic Games announces surprise collaboration
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says Unity game developers can publish their games "directly into Fortnite" starting next year.
