The best part about Pope Leo being a Chicago boy is that the tired old trad/conservative shtick against Francis about how "His Holiness is an Italo-Argentinian, he simply can't understand the unique American situation" flies completely out the window. Leo knows the American church and has its number

Here we go - trads pulling out Ol' Reliable, "if only the pope were clear" shtick. G-d these people are so utterly predictable

Isn't the whole shtick of Catholic Apologetics the fact that Rome's guidance solves and obviates all debates? Roma locuta, causa finita?

Of course, that's always been a cynical, opportunistic and selective play, as Erasmus already pointed out regarding the mendicants: play up the pope when it suits

One of these flags just doesn't belong
Can you tell which flag is not like the others
by the time I finish this song?

Agree with Mary and this is completely incidental to her point, but Pulte is not helping beat this conservative Republican trend of their teens looking like late-30s, and their late-30s looking like late 50s/early 60s. Being self-consciously evil really does age you

Minor liturgy-nerd aside: St John Lateran is an "occidented" church, with its apse facing West rather than East. Hence the popes have always celebrated facing the people, which is also "ad orientem" here. Ironically, Tawadros faced away from the people, with the sunrise streaming in behind him.

In the afterglow of last Sunday's feast of the Dedication of the Papal Archbasilica of St John Lateran in Rome, I am reminded of the late Pope Francis' incredibly generous and symbolically rich gesture of inviting Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria, head of Coptic Orthodoxy, to celebrate Liturgy there

Friends, the Magi brought Gold to the baby Jesus; the Emperors and Popes offered Gold in building the magnificent archbasilica whose dedication we celebrate today. President Trump’s beautiful gilded White House truly completes this trifecta tying together the Good, the True and the Beautiful

Friends, today’s Gospel tells us about Jesus cleansing the Temple of the merchants who were doing business with all kinds of foreign riffraff, taking alien coins from who knows where. One wonders, is not DHS/ICE applying Jesus’ lesson in declaring: “America for Americans, out with the aliens?”

A hint of the endurance of the Church's preeminence as Virgin Mother, over the Blessed Virgin Mary ("the preeminent disciple, but the Church is still greater than she"—Augustine), is the placement of Commons in the liturgy of the hours. Only one preceding Common of BVM is Dedication of a Church.

“Do you wish to find this basilica immaculately clean? Then do not soil your soul with the filth of sins. Do you wish this basilica to be full of light? God too wishes that your soul be not in darkness, but that the light of good works shine in us”
