At first I this surprised me and then I remembered when the English colonised NZ, they knowingly built my neo-gothic hometown on a swamp in a quake zone (at the time NZ was nicknamed the Shaky Isles). When we had serious quakes in 2010-2012, it was devastating. Different century, same hubris.
