Kiwi in the UK, described by British MPs as “cheap foreign labour”. Sweary leftie into travel, books, geeky wee moments, coffee, gigs. Ex-fundie. Cis ally 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️. Curious about the green slimy thing looking over your shoulder as you read.

A kindred spirit! From The Upstairs Delicatessen: on Eating, Reading, Reading about Eating, and Eating While Reading by Dwight Garner.

The aforementioned goat, and some bird friends without context in a fake kitchen because why not? To be fair, this museum is also doing great decolonisation work, so extra reasons to go.

There is nothing quite like belting the words to Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus at a disco in a cathedral.

You know you’re a special kind of nerd when you spend your Friday night sitting in the sunny patch of the lounge reading the first book of War and Peace… but the Bogan translation because tutira mai ngā iwi. It’s a hoot so far, highly, highly recommend.

I know these fullas are stadium-fillers back home, but one benefit of being overseas is seeing bands like Drax Project in wee venues (and randomly shaking the drummer’s hand after the show 🤣). The nicest dudes ever and far out they *bring it*. Incredible energy from the band and the crowd.

No, Marmite from NZ is a different product from the UK version, much stronger and thicker.

Sensible me: I should do some life admin tonight.

Inner me: But SUN! And these books! I can read bits of ALL THREE and be super cosy, look at me goooo!

Guess which me won.

(My reading technique is a wee bit slutty. I tend to have 4 or 5 on the go and dip in and out depending on mood. Why not?).

Came home from a crap day at work to find this balcony flag had arrived and then stumbled upon the sweary, deliciously crass glory of Lucille Bogan’s music (featuring stella lines like “if you lick my 🐱 I’ll suck your 🍆”). Love that we have recorded proof our ancestors were horny as fuck 😂

My Indie Bookstore Day treat for myself. In between seeing morris dancers and going to a ceilidh I started it at a local restaurant. I need to take myself on cute little solo dates more often, there is nothing like sitting at a pavement bar with a book on a warm spring evening.

Trying to make onigiri because it’s one of my fave snacks when I travel through Singapore and I need a fun little food thing. Notes to future me: make a wee divot in the rice to cram in more fillings; my poor gift wrapping skills extends to onigiri; too much wasabi can also be the right amount.

Me: I need to stop buying books for a few months, save some money.
Local op shops: Hold our bookmarks.

January is long, but happily, so is my TBR pile 😌

Since I’ve been ranting a lot lately, have some spooky snow pics from my lunch time walks.

I’m still in the surreal ur-space of jet lag. Today’s a duvet day so I can enjoy the luxury of being alone for a day before the crushing reality of real life hits. Any recommendations for whimsical or surreal TV shows or movies are welcome!

Gonna really fucking miss this place, and I’m not just saying that because the weather chose to be awesome the day I’m leaving, after 3 days of rain (cheeky bastard).

Most of my English mates have doubted the existence of feijoas, but here is proof of their absolute god-like status in Te Wāi Pounamu. I’ve got fond memories of drunkenly bonding with a Chilean woman at a New Years’ party over feijoas and surviving long distance flights; they’re that good 😄

First day of the trip without chores or scheduled hang outs: time for slug mode. I’m going to read my bestie’s gift, The House on the Cerulean Sea. There’s a long, dull story about why this book took a year to arrive (courtesy of NZ Post and Royal Snail), but it’s just added to the anticipation.

…I’ve actually realised I do this all the time. In my home country we have a cookie called a Shrewsbury, and there is a town with that name in the UK. I think you can see where this is going 😄 Life would be dull without these, I reckon.

Feel bad seeing all my northern hemisphere peeps posting about their shortest day weather when I got to experience the longest day and it was basically this. This is why marrying immigrants is awesome: two hemispheres!
