I now got an almost finished book on the history of the metaverse and virtual worlds. I always thought the final chapter would be easy since it's just wrapping up with my own opinions. But in writing the book those expanded and got so nuanced that I don't know where I land anymore. 🤔😳

I took a quick break from polishing the book to write something for my neglected blog. This time around innovation and how radical and disruptive innovation not always leads to the death of the incumbents. Also a neat case study.

As I am writing about it, I think that the story of conversational interfaces is pretty much the same as the metaverse.

I find it funny that we went from: "Do AIs dream?" to: "Well, actually they dream all the time, but sometimes, if you spend enough resources and energy, their dreams line up with reality long enough for them to become somewhat useful!"

I can really relate to Obi Wan here. When we built virtual worlds and the Web and social media, we really thought we would create something for the good of humanity.

I wanted to get some writing done on my book, but I'm editing the section where social madia ignored decades of best practice in virtual world design because surely the Web was different and what could possibly go wrong if your magic circle was the real world?
