Mages skilled with fire are in charge of keeping the street lamps lit in the capital city and making sure the fires stay contained. They're also responsible for dragon watching and sounding the alarm if one or more of the creatures are sighted around or above the city. They can feel the difference between dragon fire and any other kind. There's otherwise no organized firefighting crew, the people themselves help. Law enforcement depends on the trade. Guilds have their own laws and take care of their own families. After the war, crime in general diminished in Azdiera, as people were finally free to rebuild their lives, and very busy doing so. The Warriors Guild kept its name but they became kind of general helpers, taking jobs where needed, from tavern guards to agriculture and everything in between. Healer Mages mostly work from home. People go to them for all sorts of mundane pains and ailments. There's usually one in every village and several in the larger towns. For more complex cases, which usually include magical illnesses like curses, there are the Mages at the Academy, which is in the capital city. People can either go to the Academy, or summon some of those Mages.

[Character name] loved those winter nights with clear skies and snow reflecting moonlight. He wished for this night to be soothing like that, but whispers of snowflakes falling on the glass windows told of heavy clouds and lied about stillness and peace. It was the Midwinter Feast and fires had been lit all over the city and around it to keep away the bad magic that would seep in with the good one. The noise from the celebrations didn't reach his room. Another lie in the silence. He couldn't sleep for fear of the heat his dreams would bring. The sweat that took too long to cool off after he woke. The memories on his skin. The yearning. On a night like this, with the unrestrained power of the world’s magic making more trouble than it was worth, he should be at the feast, entertaining the Empress and protecting the guests. He shut the window but couldn't bear to draw the curtains over it as well. What if… He drank the tea. [Character name] realized too late that this was also the longest night of the year but on the verge of falling asleep, that thought made the reflex snarl turn into a smile on his lips. He was still smiling when he saw the dragon appear in the dream, a little while later.

"That's not how the magic works!" The Prince wailed, grabbing his head in both hands, pulling it down as if to break his own neck and slid down the wall to crouch in a trembling ball of fear, crying. The Mage wanted to go to him, hug away whatever was wrong and... he was lying to himself again. He thought he understood how the magic worked and he'd had several lifetimes to learn its ways and hate it. What the Prince was implying was something even worse. He didn't want that kind of hope and didn't want that kind of pain and certainly didn't want to touch the creature crouching in front of him. And that was when he understood, hearing his own wail as if it were someone else's, the harmony his own voice was adding to that of the Prince and forced himself to laugh through it, to break it. He laughed through wrecking sobs, not daring to take his eyes away from the man in front of him. This was something he had to witness and live through, to remember and save the story for those who would never know magic of this kind, but would need it.
