I guess it's just that Command was the first game that brought it full force into the games themselves and even Smash Bros. would adopt it afterwards.

A lot of people blame SFC for seemingly introducing Fox's "bell shaped" (Really kitsune mask shaped) head but the reality is that Takaya Imamura, the man at Nintendo who created Fox and the SF universe and was also responsible for Command's story/character stuff, had already been drawing him thatway

Lee kinda alluded to that being a big factor into why Rare (at least the higher ups like the Stampers) were onboard with the decision to utilize the SF IP for Dino Planet in that video interview I posted.

Diddy Kong Racing, a game Lee Schuneman made before directing DP/SFA, also started off as a Pro-Am reboot starring Timber before they plopped Diddy into it to make it sell more as they needed a big holiday seller for 1997 when Banjo-Kazooie got delayed into 1998.

Obviously it's a bit more smaller/insular and niche, but it's there. Don't believe anyone who says that "Star Fox fans all just only liked SF64 and just want more of that".

That's funny because from my experiences in the SF fanbase, especially around places like the SF subreddit, it seems to be largely filled with people who think Assault was the peak of the series, that any new game should be a story/gameplay sequel to it, that they should bring Krystal back, etc

We really only got SFA on GCN because it was Nintendo's game and it was far along enough by then, which forced Rare's hand to crunch the shit out of whatever they had left in development before the MS buyout. Otherwise I imagine it would have been pushed to Xbox...and bomb there like Ghoulies did.
November 19, 2025 at 12:23 PM
Like sure, maybe they could have pushed for DP onto GCN without the SF change...but then I don't even think it would come out there, it'd likely just be held back for Xbox like the other games Rare planned for GCN like Ghoulies, Kameo, and PDZ.

At the very least, Lee had already heavily implied this but the change to SF alone wasn't what caused the game to be so heavily cut down in content (i.e Krystal's stages), it's because Rare had to also deal with remaking the game on GCN while dealing with tight deadlines. youtu.be/e9hVIkMS4Gg?...

Per admitted by Lee in the interview I linked to, they knew that even before the SF deal that they were going to have to make a major change to DP because it was an ambitious original new IP being released so late into the aging N64's lifespan with the GCN on the horizon.
November 19, 2025 at 12:23 PM
I just don't think we ever were going to get the original N64 DP.

As for Assault, well its problem is that it was clearly a multiplayer arena shooter that had a single-player cobbled together halfway into development. It's kinda funny and sad seeing Imamura and the crew trying to justify the lack of branching paths as some sort of smart design decision...
November 18, 2025 at 8:20 PM
Another thing that's funny is how both Command and Zero, the only two post-64 games with any sort of branching paths to take, reportedly started off as linear experiences, something more noticeable with Zero.
November 18, 2025 at 8:16 PM
Well, Assault's 20th was back in February, quite a couple of months before the Switch 2 itself launched lol
November 17, 2025 at 6:06 PM
"I absolutely feel like the devs were going for that with Krystal" they were, and the wildest thing about it is that order came from Nintendo themselves.
November 17, 2025 at 6:04 PM
That's okay, most people didn't...
November 17, 2025 at 4:56 PM
Like I'd like to point out...Star Fox Command especially basically already did this back in 2006 lmao. SF's already got its "quirky sidekick character robot thing". Look for yourself: youtu.be/7xtCYSyghbo?...
