it took me two full years to crawl through this book, this is a very dense thesis, so my review is big and it's in the screenshots attached
book cover: "My 'W/ri[gh]t/E' and My Land": A Postcolonial Feminist Study on Grassroots' Archives and Autobiography (1937-2004) by Sinith Sittirak a careful and thoughtful study of diaries, notes, 400 petitions, letters, and all the documents related to Thai land rights activist Pornpet Meuansri, this book took me ages (literally two) to get through. it’s intensely dense, requires a lot of contextual googling and asking thai friends about a lot of stuff, and yet it’s incredibly rewarding. nothing has explained the nuances of Thailand’s social and political climate as effectively as this book i am stunned by the depth and audacity of the book’s central question: “Can the subaltern write?” this evolves into a second, equally important question: “Can we actually read what they have written?” can we move beyond the desire to extract facts, confirm or deny our beliefs, and skip all the assumptions in our heads? can we instead sit down, listen, and truly hear what others are saying? can we make our best effort to understand them as they are, including their pauses and the negative spaces in their narratives? i am deeply moved by this book and by Sinith Sittirak’s graceful audacity in providing broader context—layer upon layer—while keeping Pornpet’s story deeply personal. this book is essentially a thesis, and though Sinith cannot write about herself directly, so she uses Pornpet’s story as a vessel. in the end, you see what Sinith is doing and what she is trying to convey through her research, and that's beautiful i’m in awe. i think this might be the best (and one of the most challenging) books i’ve read in recent years. on an intellectual level, reading this book is a humbling experience. Sinith’s mastery of her tools and craft demands that from now on the reader should approach topics with greater care, thoughtfulness, and a stronger connection to the real problems faced by those who are speaking but remain unheard five stars, five hearts, a field of flowers

my new favorite artist from bkk art biennial is AKI INOMATA who works with zoos to set up the blocks of woods and have beavers carve them

she displays the wood carved by beavers as sculptures and also makes 2 meter tall replicas on the milling machine and displays them too

t was a place where you could write that you're tired and feeling sad (nothing big happened and that's a momentary feeling) and get some likes as a mostly faceless but still human connection and somewhat validating response. I'm not sure that bluesky is that place, anyway here's the sunset
