(Coming at the end of a marathon of the other Koike pre-movie special was kinda a lot, though)

Finally somewhat unexpectedly got to see the Koike Zenigata special that came out a few months ago. Good stuff.

Junk World is an absolute delight. The very specific way it uses a combination of both low and high brow humour to explorer genuine science fiction high-concepts reminds me a lot of Red Dwarf (positive), though that might just be the funny salutes.

Kawamoris movie Labyrinth is about a girl so stressed by becoming an unintended viral Internet hit that she gets trapped inside her cellphone whilst a doppelgänger formed from her troll account interacting with 7G attempts to complete her real-world self actualisation via social media shitposts.

Enjoyed Lupin the IIIRD The Immortal Blood more the second time around, going into it knowing the specific tone it was going for in advance. It is pretty toned down from the previous Koike instalments in the way it uses violence, which makes the 5 minutes of recap kinda funny.

(The Zenigata special is great and I’m glad to have now seen it, even if it is on the other side of having seen the movie sequel twice)

This, admittedly, would be way less of an issue if (a) it wasn’t the fourth screening I was at today and primarily (b) I didn’t have to catch a 6am train out of town as boy I’m going to be running on zero sleep tomorrow…

Which isn’t to say I don’t understand people not liking the movie - believe me, I get it - but there’s nothing about it that strikes me as unintentional.

Also, I liked it more the second time.

Figured out where Cyber Formula fits into this glorious mess this time around as well.

The sheer number of callbacks to other things he’s been involved in is pretty insane - the DYRL, Macross Plus and Aquarion references are in-your-face obvious, but there’s even stuff you could attribute to Arjuna in there.

In one word: Incredible.

In two words: utterly deranged.

Shoji Kawamoris Labyrinth might actually be my favourite movie of the year, but I kinda don’t really want to spoil anything.

I can’t even begin to describe Labyrinth, the new movie by Shoji Kawamori. If you are familiar with, say, Aquarion, then you know he can get pretty out there sometimes. Imagine a Hosoda Internet Movie filtered through the lens of Arjuna and you might be about 50% of the way there, though. Loved it.

Saw All You Need Is Kill again. Fun to spot some of the signposting early on in the movie to later events. Way more of that movie is well-processed CG than was immediately obvious. Continues to have no interest in being a straight adaptation of the novel or manga.
