differencenortheast📚 "What Happened to You?" – A Story That Matters 🎥 This Disability History Month, Bex from Difference North East reflects on the impact of "What Happened to You?" by James Catchpole, illustrated by Karen George. 🌟 In the video, Bex shares how this children's book helped her feel seen and valued in a world where questions like "What happened to you?" often feel overwhelming. Through Joe’s story—a child with one leg who just wants to play—this book gently introduces the importance of disability representation and etiquette. 💬 What books or films or people have shaped your understanding of disability? Why it matters: Books can shape how we understand the world. For disabled children & adults, seeing themselves in stories challenges pity, builds pride, opens up belonging. Our list has memoir, history, kids' books, something for every age.

In 1995, disabled activists chained themselves to buses, blocked traffic, and demanded equality. They didn’t wait for permission, and they made history. As we launch Disability History Month 2025 (15 Nov–15 Dec), we remember that history and ask: How far have we come? How far do we still have to go?

A useful reality check for the media frenzy on Disabled people and work. We need government action to make work more accessible, not more training for Disabled people! What has your experience been?
