I think it’s less about AI (which I am not convinced can actually reduce demand for labor), and more about a backlash against the early 2020s welfare state expansion and strong position of labor due to low unemployment

Thank you for this analysis, it’s useful. I think two other factors matter (just speculating): first, it gets rid of penalties when many are already not paying, decreasing criminalization, and second, it saves low income people hundreds of dollars per year or more. Both of those are big impacts.

They have contempt for protest and ordinary people. They think anyone in the streets is a dirty hippie or a radical. They are so misguided that they can’t see that they win because of protest and organizing.

I remember going to a lot of late 2000s/early 2010s protests where it was me and then the people who had been coming out since the ‘80s or earlier. It was a lonely time in some ways but I learned so much from them

But this hasn’t passed into law yet. There are still opportunities to use the narrow divide in Congress to change the bill or make it fail. Maybe you’ll be right in the end, but we’re not at the end yet.

I’m not convinced that the IRA approach of delivering money/jobs to red districts has failed. It has, at the very least, complicated the negotiations on Trump’s budget bill this week and still has the potential to kill it, via pressure on Republicans who have green industries in their districts
