For all the talk about USMCA surviving the tariff storm, it’s far from safe.

I told The Economist: “It isn’t about Trump recognising Mexico as a partner — it’s because of the interdependence we’ve built.” Ironically, it’s this very interdependence that Trump is trying to unravel.

Mexico’s Senate just passed reforms dissolving key watchdogs—a major blow to checks & balances and a serious challenge to USMCA.

My 2 takeaways as to why it matters:

Let’s be clear: the only winners of a tariff war in North America would be China and Russia. 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽 workers and families stand to lose in a less competitive, divided region. Tariffs that shatter confidence in #USMCA would also jeopardize its extension in 2026. #StrongerTogether
